What should I expect in the first session?
Our first sessions will focus on establishing a comfortable relationship between us, and on me understanding your goals for therapy.
I will ask you some questions about what you hope to get out of our time together and about your history (your family, significant relationships, career, mental health), and your current situation (strengths, supports and stressors). I understand that it can feel awkward talking to a stranger about things you are struggling with and I will help you to pace that process in a way that feels most comfortable for you. I'm always happy to answer any questions and to discuss your hopes and reservations about therapy.
We will also do a little paperwork -- I'll ask you for contact information, and we'll discuss confidentiality.
The only thing you need to bring is your health insurance card, if you want to use your benefits.
This evaluation phase is likely to take one to three sessions. By the end of the evaluation, I will be able to offer you some first impressions of what our work will include and how we are likely to proceed if you decide to continue in therapy. I will always be happy to discuss my recommendations and to answer any questions so that you can decide whether you feel comfortable with me and wish to go forward with therapy.
